Alamance County does not currently have traditional zoning in the unincorporated areas of the county. This means the County does not assign properties into zoning districts (such as Residential, Commercial, Industrial, etc.) that control land use countywide outside of town and city limits.
However, this does not mean land is unregulated. Development may still be subject to other County, State, and Federal requirements, including building permits, septic and well regulations, watershed and floodplain rules, subdivision standards, and other development-related ordinances.
Properties located inside a municipality (such as Burlington, Graham, Mebane, Elon, Haw River, Swepsonville, Green Level, or Saxapahaw) are regulated by that municipality’s zoning ordinance and development standards.
If you are unsure what rules apply to your property, the Alamance County Planning Department can help confirm whether the property is inside or outside municipal limits and identify what development regulations may apply.
