How do I Start a Development Project?

If you are planning to develop property in Alamance County, the following steps will help guide you through the process:

Step 1: Submit a Planning Application
Start by completing a planning application for your proposed project. This allows the Planning Department to review your proposal and determine what approvals may be required.

Step 2: Staff Review
Planning staff will review your application to ensure it meets county regulations and may contact you if additional information or documentation is needed.

Step 3: Technical Review Committee (TRC) – If Required
Some development projects must be reviewed by the Technical Review Committee. This process allows multiple county departments to review your project and provide feedback.

Step 4: Obtain Required Permits and Approvals
Depending on the project, you may need additional approvals from departments such as Environmental Health, Building Inspections, or other regulatory agencies.

Step 5: Begin Development

Code Enforcement

When a complaint is taken on a property, the Planning Department will visit the site to verify the status of the violation. Generally, it can take 30 days or more to rectify any violations. We do our best to work with citizens to gain compliance through notification and education.
